| Preface: I was inspired by Prof. Farhang Mehr's lecture "Zoroastrianism and Its Contributions to World Religions" at Stanford on Nov. 17, 2005. When I received an email about Prof. Insler's talk "Zarathustra: The Man and the Message", I was eager to attend and learn more about this Persian prophet and sage. The room was packed with many in the audience from the Bay Area Iranian community. Prof. Abbas Milani, Director of the Iranian Studies at Stanford, introduced Prof. Stanley Insler as a Professor from Yale since 1963. He translatedThe Gathas of Zarathustra (1975). Since 1977, he has been the Edward E. Salisbury Professor of Sanskrit and Comparative Philology. He was Chairman of Yale's Department of Linguistics from 1978-1989. He was elected President of the American Oriental Society (1997-98). He was a speaker at the 3000th Anniversary of Zarathustra at the Library of Congress (2003). Prof. Insler: I've not been at Stanford for 20 years. It's nice to see such a large audience here. At Yale, it's usually my colleagues who attend my talks. Perhaps it's the nice weather here in the Bay Area that I'm gettting a better crowd. Zoroaster is the Greek name and Zarathustra the Persian name.
