CHIKMAGALUR: By spending just Rs 3,000, one can have four to five hours of continuous gas supply to the kitchen. This innovative gobar gas plant has been designed by Krishnaraju who has been working as a senior veterinary inspector at Daradahalli in Mudigere taluk and is known for his innovative ideas.
The new user-friendly, low-cost plant only needs a basketfull of cow dung, a 11ft long and 7ft wide 250mm plastic sheet and two PVC pipes. One need not dig a pit to construct a tank; the plastic sheet itself will act as a tank.
Cow dung mixed with water will be fed through a PVC pipe and after one hour the gas containing methane will start emanating from the tank continuously for four hours. Krishnaraju said constructing the plant will cost a minimum of Rs 20,000 with additional costs for annual maintenance, but this unit is not at all expensive and is very easy to handle. Once installed, the unit can be used for five to six years. Krishnaraju says his main aim is to save forests.
In rural areas, fuel wood consumption can be reduced by installing this low cost gas unit. It will save the womenfolk much strain and time.
The unit can be installed on roof tops if it is an RCC house.
He has installed it in the house of D N Veerendra Gowda at Daradahalli. His wife Savitha, talking to The Times of India, said they get gas for five hours every day with the dung from their cow shed. After using the gas, the slurry becomes manure for the plants. Contact Krishnaraju at 94480-73711
