The birth of Chromotherapy

Have you ever wondered why you feel thrilled when you see a rainbow on a rainy day? The magnificent colors of rainbows are the seven ranges of light that we and all living beings depend on for survival. Colors affect our mind, emotions and mood as well as every nerve, cell, gland and muscle in our bodies. Extensive research has proved that exposure to color and light helps healing our bodies and minds. Chromotherapy, also called Color Therapy, is an alternative healing technique that uses colors to promote health and healing.

The birth of Chromotherapy

Healing with colors has been around for millennia: in ancient Egypt, patients were treated in rooms with colored glass roofs. In ancient Greece and China, colored hallways were used to help heal various ailments.
This technique was lost until Ibn Sina (980-1037 CE) discussed it in “The Canon of Medicine”.He wrote that "Color is an observable symptom of disease", and developed a chart showing the relationship between color and the temperature and physical condition of the body. Chromotherapy steadily grew In the 19th and 20th centuries when in 1878, Dr. Edwin D. Babbitt published his book “Principles of Light and Color” describing various techniques of healing with color. The "Medical Light Institute" in Copenhagen was founded in 1896 where light was used by Dr Niels Finsen to heal wounds and treat tuberculosis. In 1933, Indian scientist Dinshah Ghadiali published "The Spectro Chrometry Encyclopedia", laying the foundation for modern color therapy.

How does it work?

Chromotherapy is now applied as CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) and is effective in treating asthma, skin diseases (eczema, psoriasis), SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), depression, sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, migraines, bronchitis and other diseases.
Its principles are based on healing the blockages detected in the energetic system of the body.
According to the Ayurvedic School of Medicine, each of the seven primary “Chakras” (energy centers) in the body is associated with one of the seven colors of the visible color spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo & violet) and vibrates at the same frequency or wavelength. Each chakra governs over a specific section of the body including systems, organs and glands. When a chakra is blocked or disturbed, physical illnesses gradually develop in the related area. The energy of colors is believed to clear the disruption, sluggishness or blockage, and re-establish a healthy energetic flow.
Color therapy can be applied using clothes, food colors, wall painting, colored glasses, prisms, crystals and exposure to colored lights. It can also be implemented through color breathing, visualization and meditation on a specific color.
The following chart maps the effects of color on each chakra:
