    Yamunotri.. Chakrata.. Kalsi... Dakpathar.. Asan Barrage... Paonta Sahib... unplanned

    Hi BCMT Friends.......

    This is my second travelogue,,,,, again as usual an unplanned one... 

    sorry for quality of photos as they are scanned ones....

    It just happened that i was posted to Herbertpur mission hospital as part of my social and preventive medicine rural posting.

    Herbertpur is a small peaceful town 35 kms from Dehradun.
    I had to work in all depts. like med. surgery.etc for 2-2 days plus one day in a school for children suffering from cerebral palsy(CP).
    ANUGRAH was the name of the school ... which was named after the kid who also had CP n whose father initiated this school.....
    Spending a day there was one of the most memorable days of my life.....
    and looking at the sweet children who were so innocent and laughing n enjoying inspite of all the problems...

    We all must be thankful to God that he gave us good health to do so many things in life....

    Taare Zameen par


    Herbertpur - nothing much to see here.....
    just the momos... 10 Rs ke 5..

    Whenever i go to a new place a "keeda" (insect) bites me and i start asking
    one common question to all " yahan pe aas paas ghumne ki jagah kaun kaun si hain"
    the sum of all answers was
    YAMUNOTRI.. CHAKRATA.. KALSI... DAKPATHAR.. ASAN BARRAGE... PAONTA SAHIB...
    and so it began ... starting from nearest to farthest..

    1st - Dakhpathar- just few (4-5) kms from herbertpur
    how to reach - direct local buses from herbertpur and Vikasnagar
    what i liked - very less crowded, a small beautiful garden surrounded by
    yamuna one side and a big manmade lake and canal on the other.

    Yamuna river where i used to sit till it used to get dark .. sipping my "chai"
    enjoying the calmness of that place.....

    next place was KALSI - < 10 kms from Vikasnagar
    how to reach - local buses
    what i liked - rock edict of ASHOKA.- national treasure.

    There was no other thing to see there. After i came out of the gate of this place i saw a long line of jeeps .
    I asked the locals what is this line for ..?
    they said that they are waiting for one-way to chakrata to open.
    I quickly enquired about chakrata
    Ques - how far....? Ans - 40 kms
    Ques - what to see...? Ans - "thanda mausam hai wahan.... tiger fall....
    aap Christian ho isliye aapke liye bahut saal purana church hai... etc etc"
    Ques - kya ek din me jaa ke aa sakte hain...? ( as i had just one day )
    ANS. yes but "aakhri gate waapsi ke liye 5 baje khulta hai.... uske baad jeep nahi milegi.'
    As soon as the gate opened i quickly hopped on the backside of a open jeep..
    I thought 40 km are not much and i can stand and enjoy the ride and view.. and truly i did........

    CHAKRATA

    As i had to return on the same day so i skipped the trek to tiger fall...
    just went around to search the old church...... which was just nearby..

    I had never seen a church like this before.....

    i think the members of the church were not humans but cows..
    thank God my camera had timer .... as no one was around....
    i reached back on time to my hospital promising myself to come back for the tiger fall...
    Next nearest place was asan barage and paonta sahib... just 10 kms from herbertpur...
    these places are on the road to chandigarh and shimla from dehradun..

    ASAN BARAGE -
    nice place to enjoy a boat ride.. sit, sip chai..( i don't like coffee much) and see the migratory birds which come to this lake...

    Next was YAMUNOTRI....
    i came to know that it's just 200 km and a bus from vikasnagar directly takes u to hanuman chatti from where yamunotri is just 14km.
    I didn't want to miss this opportunity so i decided to bunk the 2 days of medicine posting..
    but everybody told me not to go there as in february no one goes there because the mandir is closed and there might be snowfall...
    but i was determined to go ... next day i caught the first bus and reached hanuman chatti..around 6 pm in evening.....
    to my surprise no hotel was opened there.... they said "ye sab garmiyo me khulte hain jab log darshan karne aate hain....."

    I am a chai addict ... and because of this i was saved.
    I went to chai shop and ordered chai ... while sipping my chai i started enquiring about the place.
    the owner (Narayan) asked me "aap kahan se aaye ho, is mahine me qyun aaye, etc etc
    i gave answers to all his questions.. and told him that I don't want to go back... from here.
    He was very nice fellow.. after listening to my whole story..
    he agreed to give me place to sleep and food and also told me that he himself will take me there
    " jab aap itni door se aa sakte ho... to main yahan rehte hue kyun na jaaoon"

    Narayan ka dhaba....


    Next morning i got a bad news that there were land slides at two places in hanuman chatti itself.
    so i have to walk till janki chatti ...]
    this thing added extra 7 kms otherwise jeeps easily go till janaki chatti...

    So what... jo hoga dekha jayega.... and i start my walk or trek...

    me and narayan kept walikng... talking about life in mountains.. treks he had done... he told me about the dodi taal trek etc etc

    We quickly reached janaki chatti took a small chai break...

    and then again started to walk...

    at some places it was quite steep and narayan said "aap plains ke log , bahut jaldi thak jaate ho..."
    On the way we met a Sadhu baba ... who saw me exhausted so offered me black tea...

    and started telling about Saptrishi kund..... and how he go walking from one dham to another by some short trek routes.
    His talks were quiet interesting...

    On reaching there the main priest was quiet surprised...
    he told me to do his eye check up as he was not able to see clearly...
    I told him to get catract surgery done but he told that
    it's been 40 yrs that he has crossed YAMUNA JI... and he will not cross yamuna ji again till he dies.

    He asked his disciples to make chai ,gave us prashaad...and told us to take bath in holy water

    ufffff...... the water seems to be boiling and outside temprature was freezing.
    Still i somehow manage to take one dip....

    We hurried on our way back and reached hanuman chatti at 8:30 in the night after covering 28 kms in one day....
    Next day i thanked Narayan and promised him to come back for dodi taal and saptrishi kund trek.

    WITH A PEACEFUL MIND AND SOUL I CAME BACK....

    I have been to Dakpathar and Yamunotri and have drove past Ponta Sahib. These are all very nice places and freshens a lot of good memories. Very good begining. I hope it does not end here. Please post more.

    Hey Victor I enjoyed your log,quite nostalgic one,dont know why but these unplanned,simple lonely trips have something enticing.
    BTW the whole area around Yamunotri looks quite arid.
